{"id":18009,"date":"2020-08-05T23:52:12","date_gmt":"2020-08-06T04:52:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rnrachicago.org\/?page_id=18009"},"modified":"2020-08-05T23:52:12","modified_gmt":"2020-08-06T04:52:12","slug":"neighborhood-update-regarding-august-4th-shooting-incident-on-oak-street","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/newsite.rnrachicago.org\/?page_id=18009","title":{"rendered":"Neighborhood Update Regarding 8-4-2020 Shooting Incident on Oak Street"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Messagae from Alderman Reilly \u2013 Reilly Reports 8\/5\/2020<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dear Neighbors,<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, shortly\u00a0after\u00a04:00pm, three individuals were shot on Oak Street, between Rush Street and Michigan Avenue.\u00a0One\u00a0victim succumbed to his injuries;\u00a0he was\u00a0later identified as\u00a0Carlton Weekly, also known as\u00a0rapper\u00a0\u2018FBG Duck.\u2019\u00a0Weekly\u2019s associate and his girlfriend were\u00a0also shot and were\u00a0transported to local hospitals for\u00a0immediate care.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This was a targeted attack and an isolated incident<\/strong>.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/news\/breaking\/ct-gold-coast-shooting-fbg-duck-20200805-fqsdba7b3vdwznzkeybnspsk2m-story.html\">Weekly\u00a0was a gang member\u00a0who\u00a0had\u00a0been\u00a0involved in an ongoing conflict with another\u00a0rival\u00a0gang<\/a>.\u00a0Recently,\u00a0Weekly had taken to social media to taunt rival gang members\u00a0and was\u00a0widely broadcasting\u00a0his location via social media yesterday when offenders shot him on Oak\u00a0Street.<\/p>\n<p>Chicago Police Department officers were\u00a0already\u00a0in the\u00a0Gold Coast\u00a0yesterday prior to the shooting,\u00a0responding to\u00a0reports of an individual with a gun on the same\u00a0block of Oak.\u00a0Shortly after,\u00a0two cars pulled\u00a0up\u00a0and four gunmen emerged, shot Weekly, his associate,\u00a0and\u00a0his\u00a0girlfriend,\u00a0and fled the scene.\u00a0The officers\u00a0who\u00a0responded to the earlier call requested backup immediately upon hearing the shots and were on the scene within minutes.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Chicago Police Department is reviewing\u00a0security footage\u00a0from the area, and I am\u00a0hopeful they\u00a0will be able to identify\u00a0and arrest\u00a0these brazen criminals.<\/p>\n<p>As Alderman, I do not have jurisdiction over Chicago Police Department staffing or deployment downtown.\u00a0I have been working around the clock these past few\u00a0months\u00a0with the Chicago Police Department, Mayor\u00a0Lightfoot and her team, and other\u00a0City safety agencies to\u00a0review\u00a0security\u00a0issues in detail and discuss the\u00a0Department\u2019s\u00a0plan to address ongoing safety concerns in downtown Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, at the time of this incident, I was in a meeting with Mayor Lightfoot, Superintendent Brown, Deputy Chief O\u2019Shea, Commander Stevens, Alderman Hopkins,\u00a0representatives from the Cook County State\u2019s Attorney\u2019s Office,\u00a0and other stakeholders\u00a0to discuss safety concerns\u00a0downtown and\u00a0near the Magnificent Mile.\u00a0We are\u00a0working on strategies\u00a0to address crime downtown, and I will keep you updated on these\u00a0collaborative\u00a0efforts.<\/p>\n<p>One strategy that has recently been implemented is the Chicago Police Department\u2019s new\u00a0<strong>Critical Incident Response Team<\/strong>, comprised of 200 officers who provide\u00a0rapid response to large-scale events requiring Police attention. This team\u00a0supplements\u00a0the downtown Police districts when not dispatched to large events. This year,\u00a0protests have been a significant drain on local district resources, and this team will provide real-time response,\u00a0<strong>allowing the districts to free up their resources to\u00a0maintain public safety downtown<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Chicago has some of the strictest gun control legislation of any major city in the United States. However due to relaxed laws in neighboring states like Indiana, it is\u00a0easy to obtain illegal firearms and difficult for our laws to be effective. I am hopeful that with the addition of\u00a0a\u00a0new\u00a0Federal\u00a0initiative targeting gun\u00a0trafficking and\u00a0violent\u00a0crime, that will change.<\/p>\n<p>As\u00a0many\u00a0of you may know,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/news\/criminal-justice\/ct-chicago-gun-arrests-federal-20200805-lk4r5syalzbavemnvwvvmbtoly-story.html\">Operation Legend is a new Federal law enforcement initiative\u00a0in Chicago<\/a>, which\u00a0adds\u00a0personnel and much-needed resources to fight\u00a0violent crime in Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>Under the leadership of John R.\u00a0Lausch\u00a0Jr., U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, the federal government\u00a0is\u00a0sending\u00a0hundreds of personnel from the FBI,\u00a0DEA, ATF, U.S. Marshals Service Great Lakes Task Force, and Department of Homeland Security\u2019s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) to supplement state and\u00a0local law enforcement agencies in their efforts to fight violent crime,\u00a0<strong>particularly gun violence.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>These personnel will work to\u00a0<strong>supplement the Chicago Police Department\u2019s efforts<\/strong>\u00a0to conduct investigations into gangs, narcotics traffickers, violent offenders, and\u00a0firearms traffickers.<\/p>\n<p>To further support the Chicago Police Department in reducing violent crime, ATF has deployed its national Crime Gun Intelligence Mobile Command Vehicle to assist\u00a0local law enforcement with analysis of crime scenes and spent shell casings, providing timely, efficient analysis of ballistic evidence from shootings in order to quickly\u00a0disrupt violent criminals and prosecute those prohibited from possessing firearms under federal law.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the Federal government has made $9.375 million available to the Chicago Police Department to\u00a0<strong>fund hiring of 75 police officers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0major benefit of the federal assistance is that their arrests will be\u00a0<strong>federally prosecuted<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 which will likely result in stiffer penalties and real consequences for\u00a0offenders.<\/p>\n<p>I recently spoke with Anna\u00a0Davlantes\u00a0on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wgnradio.com\/anna-davlantes\/alderman-brendan-reilly-its-clear-looking-at-the-recent-trends-in-violent-crime-downtown-that-we-do-need-additional-resources-here\/\">WGN Radio<\/a>\u00a0to share updates on\u00a0steps I\u2019ve taken regarding the recent rise in crime and our need for additional resources.<\/p>\n<p>Gun violence and brazen crime\u00a0downtown\u00a0\u2013\u00a0or any other neighborhood in the City\u00a0\u2013\u00a0is unacceptable. The 42nd\u00a0Ward is the economic engine of\u00a0Chicago\u00a0and we need\u00a0additional police resources to ensure the financial gears of the City keep turning, tourists continue to visit, businesses are able to serve patrons to the best of their\u00a0ability, and residents feel safe in their neighborhoods.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Please keep reporting your concerns, in real-time, by calling 9-1-1.<\/strong>\u00a0CPD is a statistics-based department: the frequency of 9-1-1 calls goes a long way toward\u00a0determining the amount of resources dedicated to address issues at specific locations.<\/p>\n<p>Chicago has faced extraordinary circumstances this past year, a\u00a0pandemic,\u00a0severe economic distress, righteous civil\u00a0\u00a0unrest\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0unintended\u00a0consequences that\u00a0come with it.
