{"id":17151,"date":"2020-04-22T18:00:22","date_gmt":"2020-04-22T23:00:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rnrachicago.org\/?p=17151"},"modified":"2020-04-22T18:00:22","modified_gmt":"2020-04-22T23:00:22","slug":"participate-in-earth-week-with-friends-of-the-park-from-the-safety-of-your-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsite.rnrachicago.org\/?p=17151","title":{"rendered":"Participate in Earth Week with Friends of the Parks from the safety of your home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-17148 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/rnrachicago.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Earth-Day-.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Although our April 18 Ward Park Clean-up was cancelled, you can still participate in Earth Day Activities. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>To align with the global 50th Anniversary of Earth Day movement Friends of the Parks has some suggested activities you can do from the safety of your home. \u00a0To find out more, <a href=\"http:\/\/fotp.org\/events-page\/earth-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CLICK HERE<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>History of Earth Day<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Fifty years ago Earth Day prompted the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water and Endangered Species Acts. \u00a0In 1970, millions of people stood up to protect our planet \u2013 let\u2019s do it again!<\/p>\n<p>The National Recreation and Parks Association states: \u201cWhile the impacts of climate change are daunting, there is a growing recognition that parks can be part of the climate solution. \u00a0Parks reduce harmful carbon pollution that is driving climate change: they protect people and infrastructure from increasingly severe storms, sea-level and lake-level rise, heat waves and droughts; and they also directly reduce some of the primary public health challenges that are exacerbated by climate change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Join us this year as we take on the international theme of Climate Action by caring for our park. \u00a0It\u2019s a great way to meet your neighbors and make a difference in our community \u2013 and in the world.<\/p>\n<div class=\"entry-content\"><\/div>\n<p>For over 30 years, Friends of the Parks has been mobilizing community members to participate in Earth Day volunteerism. People from neighborhoods throughout Chicago and\u00a0the surrounding suburbs volunteer at their local parks and forest preserves to practice stewardship and celebrate community. This year\u2019s event is conducted in partnership with the Chicago Park District, the Forest Preserves of Cook County and many community groups across Chicagoland.<\/p>\n<p>EARTH WEEK kicks off on Monday April 20!
