{"id":9053,"date":"2018-03-31T12:49:34","date_gmt":"2018-03-31T12:49:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rnrachicago.org\/?p=9053"},"modified":"2018-03-31T12:49:34","modified_gmt":"2018-03-31T12:49:34","slug":"alderman-reillys-condominium-owners-privacy-ordinance-passed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsite.rnrachicago.org\/?p=9053","title":{"rendered":"Alderman Reilly&#8217;s Condominium Owners&#8217; Privacy Ordinance Passed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-8992\" src=\"https:\/\/rnrachicago.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Ordinance-hearig-32618-300x103.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"103\" \/>Alderman Reilly is very pleased to report that the Chicago City Council voted on Wednesday to approve his\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chicago.legistar.com\/LegislationDetail.aspx?ID=3313319&amp;GUID=D486B5FF-C448-4BB1-A4FD-B44172464766&amp;Options=Advanced&amp;Search=\">Condominium Owners&#8217; Privacy Ordinance<\/a>, which was co-sponsored by Alderman Hopkins and Alderman\u00a0Smith. The ordinance invokes Chicago&#8217;s &#8220;Home Rule Authority&#8221;\u00a0to overrule\u00a0Section 19(a)(7) of the\u00a0<em>Illinois\u00a0Condominium Property Act<\/em>, which forces condominium associations to share\u00a0the personal phone numbers and\u00a0email addresses of all unit owners upon written request by a unit owner.<\/p>\n<p>Alderman Reilly sponsored the ordinance after receiving correspondence from numerous condominium\u00a0associations and hundreds of 42nd Ward constituents who expressed concerns about privacy under the new\u00a0State law.<\/p>\n<p>Alderman Reilly believes that the Illinois State Legislature had good intentions when enacting this section of\u00a0the<em>\u00a0Illinois Condominium Property Act<\/em>, which sought to connect unit owners. Unfortunately, as written, the\u00a0legislation mandates the release of personal contact information to unit owners, and creates significant\u00a0privacy concerns.<\/p>\n<p>Alderman Reilly&#8217;s ordinance prevents homeowner&#8217;s associations from sharing unit owners&#8217; personal cell phone\u00a0numbers and email addresses unless a 2\/3 majority of the association votes to allow for the sharing of that\u00a0personal information.\u00a0<strong>The Condominium Owner&#8217;s Privacy Ordinance will take effect on April 18, 2018.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Illinois State Senator Kwame Raoul has also proposed legislation to amend the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ilga.gov\/legislation\/BillStatus.asp?DocNum=572&amp;GAID=14&amp;DocTypeID=SB&amp;LegId=100516&amp;SessionID=91&amp;GA=100\">Illinois Condominium Property\u00a0Act (SB0572).<\/a> Senator Raoul&#8217;s amendment\u00a0eliminates the requirement of condominium associations to share\u00a0unit owners&#8217; private contact information.Alderman Reilly supports Senator Raoul&#8217;s amendment and hopes it will\u00a0be\u00a0scheduled for a full vote in the near future.<\/p>\n<p>Alderman Reilly would like to thank residents who contacted our office about this very serious privacy\u00a0concern.<\/p>\n<p>Press:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/classified\/realestate\/ct-re-0408-condo-adviser-20180329-story.html\">In win for condo owners worried about privacy, City Council adopts ordinance shielding personal info<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Source: \u00a0Alderman Reilly Reports 3\/30\/18<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Alderman Reilly is very pleased to report that the Chicago City Council voted on Wednesday to approve his\u00a0Condominium Owners&#8217; Privacy Ordinance, which was co-sponsored by Alderman Hopkins and Alderman\u00a0Smith.
